surf, sand and insurance

me again, surfing more than the internet

the past few weekends have been filled with beach volleyball and surfing at sunset, huntington and bolsa chica beaches. this past weekend was a little different though. after surfing an intense volleyball game ensued on the sand, as in past excursions. after a thrilling come-from-behind victory (not made by my team) i was left hacking up a lung and sat out yet another marvelous game. after that it was time to go so we strapped the three longboards on the top of the car and headed out for a bite to eat. tommy's was were we ended up eating at and then check the boards one more time and then hopped on the freeway to get home and take naps. about 15 to 20 minutes away from my house an unfortunate accident occurred leaving us three frustrated and confused. the straps that were holding the surfboards on top of the car somehow gave way and sent the boards end over end through the air and into traffic behind us. after a brief moment of disbelief, we proceeded to get off the freeway and one vehicle followed us and got our information. after that ordeal we ended up going back to find no one else around the boards, which were moved over to the shoulder and discarded. the journey home turned into a discussion of how's and why's. i am glad that everyone was okay and that the owners of the boards and car were very understanding and knew that we did not set out (deliberately) to harm anyone in anyway this weekend, who really wants to shell out a few hundred bones to replace a surf board? i don't. who will shell out a few hundred bones to replace a surf board? i will. but it is not a total loss because i will be one of the people using that board on further surfing trips (with the boards being safely transported in the car).
